The Lenawee County law enforcement community and countless residents across Michigan are mourning the untimely and heartbreaking loss of Lieutenant Tony Cuevas, the beloved Chief of Police in Clinton, who passed away unexpectedly over the weekend at the age of 53.
Lt. Cuevas was more than just a law enforcement officer—he was a cornerstone of community trust, a mentor to many, and a fierce advocate for safety, integrity, and service. His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of his colleagues, community members, friends, and family.
A decorated veteran of the Michigan State Police, Tony Cuevas proudly served the people of Michigan for 24 years. His exceptional leadership was evident in every role he took on, including as the last post commander at the Adrian/Jonesville State Police Post before its closure in 2011. He then continued his work as commander of the Monroe Post, where he earned respect for his no-nonsense dedication, professionalism, and ability to inspire those around him. He officially retired from the State Police in September 2018, but his service to the community was far from over.
In February 2019, Cuevas stepped into the role of Chief of Police for the Village of Clinton, following a brief tenure as Deputy Chief. Under his guidance, the Clinton Police Department blossomed into a highly proficient and community-oriented force. Village Manager Kevin Cornish praised Cuevas for building a department that could match the investigative efficiency of larger city departments—an incredible feat for a small village agency.
He championed community policing and tirelessly worked to ensure that students in Clinton had a safe and secure learning environment. His dedication to youth safety and advocacy extended well beyond school hallways, forming the foundation of a department focused on partnership, prevention, and protection.
Chief Cuevas was not only admired for his professionalism but also for the quiet strength and humility he brought to his work. He led with compassion, mentored younger officers, and exemplified what it meant to serve the public with honor. He was a respected figure not just in Clinton, but throughout the greater Lenawee County and beyond.
In the wake of his sudden passing, Clinton Police Sgt. Ryan Hillard has stepped into the role of Acting Police Chief, tasked with continuing the legacy of excellence and dedication that Lt. Cuevas embodied every day.
At this time, funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, and the community awaits the opportunity to honor a man whose service left an indelible mark on every life he touched.
Lt. Tony Cuevas’s legacy will live on in the safe streets he helped protect, the officers he mentored, and the countless lives he made better through his unwavering commitment to justice and community.
Rest in peace, Chief Cuevas. Your watch may have ended, but your service, your leadership, and your legacy will never be forgotten.
