Sisters Man Killed, Passenger Seriously Injured in Cascade Lakes Highway Motorcycle Crash

SISTERS, OREGON — A devastating motorcycle crash on the Cascade Lakes Highway claimed the life of a Sisters resident on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, and left a passenger critically injured. The Oregon State Police (OSP) have confirmed that Beau Douglas Gibney, 36, died at the scene after the motorcycle he was operating veered off the road and struck a tree stump. His passenger, , Joeana Erica Spackman 34, of Bend, was seriously injured and airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Crash Details

The tragic incident occurred on Forest Service Road 46, also known locally as Century Drive or Cascade Lakes Highway, at approximately milepost 24. According to OSP’s preliminary findings, Gibney was riding a black Husqvarna motorcycle heading southbound when he lost control and drove off the west shoulder of the highway.

The motorcycle collided with a tree stump, forcefully ejecting both Gibney and Spackman from the bike. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Gibney was pronounced dead at the scene. Spackman was stabilized at the site and then flown by air ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.

Investigation & Contributing Factors

The Oregon State Police, in cooperation with U.S. Forest Service personnel and Deschutes County authorities, shut down a significant portion of the highway for approximately four hours while investigators processed the crash scene. The preliminary investigation suggests that speed and impairment were likely contributing factors in the collision.

Toxicology results and further forensic analysis will be required to determine the full scope of circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators have not released details regarding where Gibney and Spackman were coming from or whether helmets were in use.

Community in Mourning

News of Beau Douglas Gibney’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Sisters and Bend communities, where both individuals were known and loved. Gibney was remembered by friends as a man who had a deep love for adventure, the outdoors, and motorcycling. His passion for the open road was rivaled only by his devotion to family and friends.

Spackman, who remains hospitalized, is described by loved ones as a “resilient and kindhearted” woman, with many now praying for her full recovery. A GoFundMe or other community support campaign is expected to be organized in the coming days to assist with her medical expenses and rehabilitation.

Safety Reminder

Tuesday’s tragic accident is a stark reminder of the risks associated with high-speed travel, especially on winding mountain roads like the Cascade Lakes Highway. Authorities urge all motorists and motorcyclists to exercise caution, remain sober, and wear proper safety gear while traveling—particularly in high-altitude or forested areas where visibility and terrain can shift suddenly.

Ongoing Investigation

The Oregon State Police are continuing their investigation into the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or observed the motorcycle in the moments leading up to the collision is asked to contact OSP at their non-emergency tip line.

Further updates on Spackman’s condition and the final findings from OSP will be released as they become available.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Beau Douglas Gibney, and we extend our heartfelt support to Joeana Erica Spackman as she recovers from this heartbreaking event.
