COLUMBUS, GA — Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan has confirmed the identity of the second homicide victim from Thursday evening’s violent incident in Columbus. The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Zandre Battle-Thomas.
The tragic event unfolded around 7:20 p.m. on July 3, 2025, near the intersection of Forrest Road and Avalon Road, a typically busy area in the city’s southeast corridor.
According to the Columbus Police Department, a shooting occurred at the intersection, resulting in the death of Battle-Thomas. Disturbingly, officials reported that at least one baby was inside the vehicle at the time the gunfire erupted. Officers arriving on scene were seen holding and comforting the child, who was unharmed and in stable condition. Authorities confirmed that the baby did not sustain any injuries.
Following the shooting, police say that the suspect fled the scene, and during their attempt to escape, were involved in a crash involving multiple vehicles in the vicinity. Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported as a result of the collision.
The Columbus Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. Detectives are working to determine a motive and identify any potential suspects. At this time, no arrests have been announced, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
“This is a heartbreaking and deeply disturbing situation,” said one officer at the scene. “A young man has lost his life, and an innocent child was placed in unimaginable danger.”
