The community of Tulsa and surrounding areas united in sorrow and remembrance on Thursday as a solemn memorial procession was held for Billy Sanders, a beloved firefighter and Assistant Fire Chief with the Disney Fire Department. Sanders, just 31 years old, tragically lost his life in a home accident, leaving behind a grieving family, a mourning community, and a legacy of heroism.
The procession began in Tulsa, where first responders, fellow firefighters, and members of the public gathered to honor Sanders. Escorted with dignity and respect, his body was transported to Jay, Oklahoma, where he had served and called home. The route was lined with supporters — many saluting, some holding signs, and others simply standing in silence — all paying tribute to a man whose life was defined by service, family, and strength.
“He was a family man,” said his older brother, Larry Sanders, who spoke through heavy grief. “He had friends, yes, but he was always with his wife and kids as much as he could be. You could ask him to go do something, and he wouldn’t go without them.”
Billy died in a tragic accident on Sunday, while trying to level a trailer home. The trailer slipped from its jack and fell on him. The day of his passing was also Larry’s birthday, adding another layer of heartbreak for the family. “It’s the toughest thing,” Larry said. “But to have the community behind us, guiding us through, is something we’ll never forget. It means everything.”
Billy leaves behind his wife and three young children, including his 6-year-old son, Blaze, who stood with his siblings at the procession. When asked what he would say to his dad, Blaze answered softly, “I love you.”
Sanders was more than a firefighter. He was a hero in every sense of the word. In 2019, the Cherokee Nation honored him as Firefighter of the Year, recognizing his dedication to protecting lives with courage and compassion. His service wasn’t just a job — it was a calling he lived with humility and heart.
Spavinaw Mayor Amanda Miller shared heartfelt words on social media, writing, “He showed up with heart, with purpose, and with a quiet strength that others could count on. He was the kind of person who didn’t just wear the uniform… he lived the calling. His loss is profound.”
Larry Sanders now vows to carry on Billy’s legacy by caring for his sister-in-law and the children. “If it was me, Billy would do the same for me. It’s my responsibility now.”
Visitation for Billy Sanders will take place on Monday, July 7, from 6-8 p.m. at Mount Hermon Church located at 42040 South 670 Road in Jay, Oklahoma. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at the same location.
Billy Sanders was a husband, father, firefighter, brother, and friend. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he served, protected, and loved. His story is not just one of loss — but one of service, sacrifice, and enduring legacy.
