Mathias, a resident of Ashville, Ohio. The accident, which occurred just before 1:00 p.m. near mile marker 23, was reported by the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) and has prompted an ongoing investigation into its cause.
According to the OSHP’s Lancaster Post, Austin T. Mathias was driving a 1999 Ford Ranger eastbound on U.S. Route 33 when his vehicle was struck from behind by a 2002 Mazda truck driven by 21-year-old Quinlan W. McCabe of Logan, Ohio. Authorities state that McCabe “failed to maintain assured clear distance ahead,” leading to the devastating collision. Mathias was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders, despite the swift response of the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, Berne Township Fire and EMS, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and the Fairfield County Coroner.
