Fatal SUV Crash on Interstate 40 Off-Ramp Claims Life of New York Woman

WILMINGTON, NC — A tragic single-vehicle accident claimed the life of a New York woman early Tuesday morning on July 15, 2025, along an Interstate 40 off-ramp in New Hanover County, North Carolina. The crash occurred around 5:03 a.m. near the eastbound I-40 exit to Gordon Road, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The incident involved a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 38-year-old Lana Hatoum of Westhampton, New York. Authorities report that the SUV was traveling eastbound on I-40 when it attempted to exit onto Gordon Road. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the left side of the ramp, struck several trees, overturned, and erupted into flames. Hatoum, the sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency responders arrived promptly and worked to extinguish the fire, but the intensity of the blaze and the severity of the crash left the vehicle heavily damaged, complicating initial efforts to determine the cause. No other vehicles were involved, and no additional injuries were reported.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is actively investigating the circumstances leading to the crash. Potential factors under consideration include excessive speed, driver fatigue, or mechanical issues, though no definitive cause has been established. Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected at this time, and it remains unclear whether toxicology tests will be conducted as part of the investigation.

The crash caused temporary closures of the Gordon Road off-ramp as emergency crews and investigators worked to clear the wreckage and examine the scene. The ramp was reopened several hours later after being deemed safe for travel.

This tragic incident underscores the hazards of early morning driving, particularly on exit ramps where sudden curves or reduced traction can increase the risk of accidents. Law enforcement officials are urging drivers to stay vigilant and exercise caution on such roadways.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is seeking assistance from the public. Anyone who may have witnessed the SUV prior to the crash or was traveling in the area at the time is encouraged to contact authorities with any information that could aid the investigation.
