Father Charged in Heartbreaking DUI Crash That Killed His 5-Year-Old Son in Beach Park

Nearly nine months after a devastating car crash claimed the life of 5-year-old Sy’mere McKnight, authorities have arrested the child’s father, Steven McKnight Jr., in connection with the tragedy. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced that McKnight, 25, of Zion, faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated DUI and reckless homicide, for his role in the November 2024 crash that shook the Beach Park community.

**A Fatal Collision on Green Bay Road
The incident occurred on November 26, 2024, along Green Bay Road, just north of Hart Street in Beach Park, Illinois. According to investigators, Steven McKnight Jr. was driving a Chevrolet Malibu when he recklessly passed vehicles in oncoming lanes, leading to a head-on collision with a GMC Sierra driven by a 57-year-old man from Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.

The scene revealed a heartbreaking lack of safety measures: two young children, Sy’mere McKnight, 5, and a 2-year-old boy, were passengers in McKnight’s vehicle, neither restrained by seatbelts or child safety seats. Shockingly, officials reported that the 2-year-old was seated on McKnight’s lap while he drove. Sy’mere suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 2-year-old sustained critical injuries, and the driver of the GMC Sierra was seriously injured.

**Investigation and Arrest
Following the crash, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office conducted an extensive investigation, involving forensic analysis, accident reconstruction, and toxicology reports. Authorities determined that McKnight was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the collision, contributing to his reckless driving. On July 24, 2025, McKnight was arrested at his home by sheriff’s deputies and SWAT members. He now faces:

– Two counts of aggravated DUI causing death
– Reckless homicide
– Endangering the life or health of a child causing death
– Four additional counts of aggravated DUI

McKnight remains in custody, with his next court date scheduled for August 7, 2025.

**A Community in Grief
The loss of Sy’mere McKnight has left a lasting impact on the Beach Park and Zion communities. A memorial of flowers, candles, and stuffed animals stood at the crash site for weeks, reflecting the community’s grief. Residents described Sy’mere as a vibrant, joyful child who loved cartoons and playing with his younger sibling. The tragedy is compounded by the fact that the alleged perpetrator is his father.

“This crash was not an accident; it was the result of reckless, impaired driving that took the life of an innocent child,” said Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg in a statement. “It’s a devastating reminder of the consequences of such choices.”

**Renewed Focus on Child Safety and DUI Enforcement
The case has spotlighted the critical importance of child passenger safety and the dangers of driving under the influence. Illinois law mandates that children under 8 be secured in appropriate car seats or booster seats, and all passengers must wear seatbelts. Authorities noted that proper restraints could have potentially altered the tragic outcome.

“This is a grim reminder of why seatbelts and child safety seats are non-negotiable,” a Lake County official stated. “Driving under the influence is never acceptable, especially with children in the vehicle.”

As the legal process unfolds, the Beach Park community continues to mourn Sy’mere’s loss while advocating for stricter adherence to child safety laws and stronger measures against impaired driving.
