Line-of-Duty Death of Firefighter Jonathan Ashworth

It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Jonathan Ashworth, age 23, of the Beauregard Parish Fire Protection District 4 in Louisiana.

On the early morning of Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at approximately 3:35 a.m., Firefighter Jonathan Ashworth and his wife, Tabitha Ashworth, were driving from their home on Scallon Road to respond to a medical emergency call on Louisiana Highway 26. While navigating a 90-degree curve under conditions of dense fog, their 2017 Ford F-150 veered off the roadway to the left and struck multiple trees. Despite immediate response efforts, Jonathan succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Tabitha, who was properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was treated accordingly.

Jonathan Ashworth had served as a volunteer firefighter/operator with Beauregard Parish Fire Protection District 4 since November 14, 2018. At just 23 years old, he exemplified the core values of the fire service: courage, integrity, selflessness, and duty. Known for his unwavering dedication, Jonathan approached every call with a determination to make a difference and a heart full of compassion. His commitment to the safety and well-being of Beauregard Parish left an indelible mark on his community and colleagues.

Jonathan was more than a firefighter; he was a protector, a servant, a brother-in-arms, and a beloved member of the DeRidder community. His loss leaves a profound void in the Beauregard Parish Fire Protection District and the hearts of all who knew him. Fire Protection District 4 Chief Eric Stracener described Jonathan as “the best person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing,” a sentiment echoed by those who worked alongside him.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop D, with a routine toxicology sample collected for analysis. The severity of the vehicle’s damage has made it difficult to determine whether Jonathan was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Fire departments across Southwest Louisiana have expressed their grief and solidarity. The Houston River Fire Department announced that flags will be flown at half-staff in Jonathan’s honor and requested prayers for his family, the fire department, and all responders. Ward Six Fire Protection District 1 called for community prayers, stating, “Pray for comfort and peace during this horrific time for the family and friends.” The DeRidder Fire Department shared, “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a BPVFD4 firefighter who gave their life in the line of duty. To our neighbors, we stand with you, and we grieve with you. We honor this hero’s sacrifice and send our deepest prayers to their family, friends, and department.” The Vinton Volunteer Fire Department also extended condolences, offering prayers for Jonathan’s family and the Beauregard Fire District 4.

We honor Firefighter Jonathan Ashworth’s ultimate sacrifice and extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Tabitha, his family, friends, and fellow firefighters. His legacy of service, bravery, and selflessness will live on in the community he served so faithfully.

Details of memorial services will be announced in the coming days as arrangements are finalized. We ask the public to join us in remembering Firefighter Ashworth for the life he lived, the service he gave, and the enduring legacy he leaves behind. Your continued support and prayers are deeply appreciated as we mourn the loss of one of our own.

Rest in peace, Firefighter Jonathan Ashworth.

Your duty is done. We will take it from here.

You will never be forgotten.
