CHICAGO — A tragic two-vehicle collision early Friday morning has claimed the life of one man and prompted an active investigation by Chicago police.
The crash occurred shortly after 2:00 a.m. near the intersection of West Belmont Avenue and North Cumberland Avenue in the O’Hare neighborhood, along the border with River Grove. According to Chicago police, a white vehicle driven by a man believed to be between 40 and 48 years old was traveling westbound on Belmont Avenue when he allegedly ran a red light and struck a blue SUV that was heading north on Cumberland Avenue.
The impact of the crash caused severe injuries to the driver of the white vehicle, who was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite emergency medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities have not yet released his identity pending family notification.
The driver of the blue SUV, a 30-year-old man, was unharmed and declined medical attention at the scene, according to police.
The intersection was temporarily closed as officers from the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Unit investigated the scene. Area Five Detectives are continuing the investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
