On Saturday, July 12, 2025, a shooting disrupted an annual Tyner High School class reunion at the Tyner Recreation Complex, located in the 6800 block of Ty Hi Drive, near the Tyner Community Center and Tyner Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The incident, which occurred just after 3:00 p.m., left four individuals hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Chattanooga Police Department (CPD) responded to reports of gunfire at the recreational field, where a large gathering was taking place as part of the alumni weekend for Tyner High School, encompassing classes from 1982 to 2024. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as multiple shots rang out, prompting attendees to either flee or take cover on the ground. Eyewitness Jeoff Herman recounted, “Everybody was just having a good time. Then all of a sudden, shots just started going everywhere. Little kids and babies and everything were on the ground. It was bad, real bad.”
Among the victims was Shyria Kelly, who was shot three times in the leg. A bystander provided initial assistance, and two nurses at the scene applied a tourniquet to control her bleeding until emergency responders arrived. All four victims were promptly transported to local hospitals for treatment and are expected to recover.
The CPD has secured the area and is actively investigating the circumstances leading to the shooting. As of now, no suspect has been identified, and no arrests have been made. Authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat. The scene, described as a soccer field near Tyner Academy filled with abandoned canopies and police vehicles, was cleared by police after approximately two hours.
