It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic and untimely passing of Michael LaMotte, age 14, who was fatally shot in the early morning hours of Friday, July 25, 2025, at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Michael’s life was cut short by a senseless act of violence, leaving his family, friends, and community devastated by an irreplaceable loss.
Michael was a bright and talented student at Rio Rancho High School, where he was preparing to begin his sophomore year this fall. Just days away from celebrating his 15th birthday on August 5, Michael was known for his vibrant spirit and deep passion for music. He possessed an angelic singing voice and a remarkable talent for playing the violin, a gift his family cherished and shared through a video of him performing—a poignant testament to the light he brought into the world.
“Michael was an incredible boy who was taken from this world far too soon,” the LaMotte family shared in a heartfelt statement. “He was a beloved son, brother, and a true friend to many. His absence has left a profound void in the lives of all who knew and loved him.”
According to court documents and statements from the New Mexico State Police, Michael was among four individuals in a dorm room at the Casas del Rio student housing complex, playing video games, when the tragic incident occurred. For reasons still under investigation, an 18-year-old suspect, John Fuentes, allegedly opened fire. Michael was fatally shot in the head and remained at the scene, while a 19-year-old was also injured and later sought treatment at the University of New Mexico Hospital. The suspect and another individual fled the scene. Fuentes was apprehended later that day in Los Lunas, New Mexico, and faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence. The investigation, led by the New Mexico State Police with support from UNM Police, continues to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragedy.
The LaMotte family has expressed concerns about the response time of UNM Police, noting that Michael’s mother called 911 early that morning after learning of the shooting, but officers did not discover Michael’s body until over an hour after a gunshot detection device alerted authorities around midnight. The family is seeking answers about the handling of the incident, emphasizing the need for accountability and improved campus safety measures.
As the Rio Rancho and UNM communities mourn this profound loss, they have rallied to support Michael’s family. Elite Physique Gym, where Michael’s mother is a member, has organized fundraisers to assist with funeral expenses, and a GoFundMe campaign initiated by Michael’s cousin, Jordan Ortiz, has raised nearly $16,000 to support the family. Michael’s obituary, filed at an Albuquerque funeral home, reflects the outpouring of love for a young man described as having a future full of promise.
