Pregnant Teen Dies Saving Baby After Road Rage Shooting in Louisiana

In Ponchatoula, Louisiana, a senseless act of violence has left a family shattered and a town in mourning. On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, 17-year-old Katelynn Strate, a vibrant young woman with dreams of motherhood, was taken off life support and passed away, three days after a devastating road rage shooting left her critically wounded. The tragedy, which unfolded on a seemingly ordinary Sunday morning, has sent shockwaves through Tangipahoa Parish, a place often described as a haven of safety and small-town charm.

Katelynn, seven months pregnant with a baby girl she was ecstatic to welcome, was riding in the passenger seat of a Ford Expedition driven by her boyfriend on North Hoover Road. It was around 9 a.m. on August 24 when their vehicle crossed paths with a silver Dodge pickup truck driven by 54-year-old Barry West of Tickfaw. What began as a dangerous dance of tailgating and brake-checking between the two drivers escalated into an unthinkable act of violence. For reasons still under investigation, West drew a firearm and fired a single shot into the Expedition. The bullet struck Katelynn in the head, shattering the promise of her future and that of her unborn child.

In a race against time, Katelynn’s boyfriend rushed her to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, where medical staff performed an emergency C-section. Miraculously, Katelynn’s baby girl, born two months premature at just 3 pounds, 11 ounces, emerged healthy and is now thriving in the neonatal intensive care unit. Katelynn, however, was left clinging to life. She was kept on life support, her family and medical team holding onto hope, until the heartbreaking decision was made to let her go after an organ donation ceremony. Katelynn’s selflessness in death will live on, as her organs have given others a chance at life.

The suspect, Barry West, was arrested the same day and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on charges of four counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and obstruction of justice. West claimed he believed the occupants of the Ford Expedition had fired at him first, but investigators found no evidence to support this—no weapon was found in the victims’ vehicle, and no other shots were fired. Following Katelynn’s death, one of the attempted murder charges was upgraded to second-degree murder, a stark acknowledgment of the life lost to this reckless act.

Sheriff Gerald Sticker called the incident a “senseless tragedy,” emphasizing the profound heartbreak it has caused. “There’s no logical reason for this family to be experiencing this right now,” he said, urging drivers to exercise patience and caution on the roads. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is now digging deeper, investigating reports of similar road rage incidents involving West. “We’ve had several people come forward with information about possible prior confrontations,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue. “Our detectives are following every lead to ensure justice is served.”

Katelynn’s loss has left an indelible mark on those who knew her. Described by family friend Katie Cancienne as “witty, bubbly, and often bitingly sarcastic,” Katelynn was a young woman full of life, deeply devoted to her family, and eagerly preparing for motherhood. “She was always a good time,” Cancienne shared, her voice heavy with grief. “The world’s not going to be the same without her.” Katelynn’s love for her family shone through in her close bond with her mother, Kristen Nicole Blow, and her excitement for her baby girl, celebrated just weeks earlier at a joyful gender reveal party.

The community has rallied to support Katelynn’s family, particularly her newborn daughter, now in the care of her grandmother and great-grandmother. A GoFundMe has been established to help cover funeral expenses, medical bills, and essential items for the baby, whose arrival, though miraculous, is bittersweet without her mother. A donation drive is also planned for Saturday, August 30, at the First United Methodist Church in Ponchatoula, where the community will come together to provide support and honor Katelynn’s memory.

This tragedy serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers of road rage and the devastating consequences of unchecked anger. In a town where safety is a point of pride, the loss of Katelynn Strate has shaken residents to their core. “People move to Ponchatoula for safety,” Cancienne said, her words echoing the disbelief felt across the community. Sheriff’s Office officials are urging anyone with information about similar incidents involving West to come forward, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and reporting dangerous behavior to prevent further heartbreak.

As the investigation continues, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office remains committed to seeking justice for Katelynn and her family. For now, Ponchatoula mourns a young life cut short, while holding onto the fragile hope embodied in the tiny, resilient baby girl who carries her mother’s legacy forward.
