Son Accused of Fatally Shooting Stepfather After Apartment Dispute in Louisville

In the heart of St. Matthews, Louisville, a devastating incident unfolded on the morning of Saturday, August 16, 2025, shattering the calm of the Jamestown Apartments. The vibrant community, nestled in the 800 block of Markham Lane, became the scene of a tragedy that would leave a family broken and a neighborhood reeling.

At just before 11 a.m., St. Matthews police officers responded to urgent reports of a shooting. Arriving at the apartment complex, they were met with a chilling sight: an apartment door ajar, two individuals standing outside, and a handgun lying on the ground, its magazine eerily detached. The individuals outside, their faces etched with shock, directed officers to the horror within—a man inside the apartment, riddled with gunshot wounds.

The victim, later identified by the Jefferson County Coroner as 48-year-old Jeremy Thomas, was rushed to UofL Hospital in a desperate bid to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Jeremy succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy of memories and a community grappling with loss.

As police pieced together the events, a suspect emerged: Deonize Lee Jr., who was present at the scene when officers arrived. Court documents paint a grim picture of the moments leading to the tragedy. Authorities allege that Lee, entangled in a heated altercation with his stepfather, Jeremy Thomas, retrieved a firearm and unleashed a hail of bullets, fatally wounding the older man. What began as a domestic dispute escalated into an irreversible act of violence.

Initially charged with assault-domestic violence, Lee’s charges were swiftly upgraded to murder-domestic, reflecting the gravity of the act. On August 21, a judge set his bond at a staggering $1 million, underscoring the severity of the case. As Lee awaits further legal proceedings, the St. Matthews Police Department continues its meticulous investigation, determined to uncover every detail of the incident that claimed Jeremy Thomas’s life.

The Jamestown Apartments, once a backdrop to everyday life, now stand as a somber reminder of the fragility of peace. The community mourns Jeremy Thomas, a man whose story was cut short in a moment of violence. As the investigation presses forward, questions linger, and the pursuit of justice remains paramount in the hearts of those touched by this heartbreaking loss.
