Teen Fatally Shot by Alleged Accomplice During Early-Morning Break-In Attempt in Cranston”

Once hailed as one of America’s best small cities, Cranston, Rhode Island, is now grappling with the aftermath of a chilling act of violence that shattered its peaceful reputation. On Monday, August 11, a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot in the early hours at the Pocasset Village Apartments—an incident that has left the community reeling and law enforcement racing to deliver justice.

### The Incident
At approximately 9:20 AM, Cranston Police responded to a distressing call: a young male was found lying unresponsive in the parking lot of the Pocasset Village Apartments on Dyer Avenue. The victim, later identified as Eduardo Loran Colon of Providence, had suffered a gunshot wound to the upper chest. Despite rapid response, the Cranston Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene.

Surveillance footage and preliminary investigations revealed that the shooting occurred around 2:53 AM. Colon, along with two others—including the alleged shooter, 19-year-old D’Maury Monteiro of Fall River, Massachusetts—had arrived at the complex in a stolen vehicle. Dressed in black clothing and masks, the trio appeared to be preparing to break into another car when an altercation erupted.

According to police, Monteiro suddenly produced a firearm and fired multiple rounds at Colon at close range before fleeing in a silver Hyundai Elantra. The motive remains unclear, but the brutality of the act has stunned both residents and authorities.

### The Investigation
Cranston detectives launched an intensive investigation, recovering multiple .40 caliber shell casings, bullet fragments, and crucial surveillance footage. Two vehicles tied to the crime were seized, and law enforcement agencies across state lines collaborated to track down the suspect.

The Rhode Island State Police Violent Fugitive Task Force, U.S. Marshals Service, Massachusetts State Police, and Boston Police Department joined forces to locate Monteiro. By Tuesday morning, he was apprehended on Fuller Street in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

A search warrant was executed at the Dorchester address to uncover further evidence, and the stolen vehicle used in the crime was recovered in Providence later that night.

### ⚖️ The Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Monteiro is currently being held in Massachusetts as a fugitive from justice. The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office is moving forward with extradition proceedings, and Monteiro faces a charge of first-degree murder.

Cranston Police Colonel Michael Winquist expressed both sorrow and resolve:
> “This was a brazen act of violence that took the life of a young man. Our detectives acted quickly to identify and apprehend the suspect, and we will continue to work diligently to bring all those involved to justice. Our thoughts are with this young man’s family as they deal with a tragic loss.”

### ️ A Community in Mourning
The murder of Eduardo Loran Colon has cast a somber shadow over Cranston. Once celebrated for its safety and charm, the city now finds itself confronting a surge in high-profile crimes. Residents are left asking how such violence could erupt in their backyard—and what must be done to prevent it from happening again.

As the legal process unfolds, Cranston stands united in grief, determined to honor Eduardo’s memory and restore the peace that once defined their community.
