Beloved Hazard Resident Killed in Solo Rollover Crash on US-23

The small community of Hazard was rocked today by tragic news: 29-year-old Opal Marie Patrick lost her life after a single-vehicle rollover along US 23 North in Floyd County. The accident, which occurred in the Dwale stretch near mile marker 11, ended in heartbreak and unanswered questions.

According to Floyd County Coroner Gregg Nelson, who confirmed the incident to WMDJ, Patrick was declared dead at the scene. No other victims or injuries were reported, and authorities say they are working to piece together how the crash unfolded. The precise cause remains under investigation.

The wreck involved just one vehicle that apparently veered off course and flipped over. The suddenness of the event left little chance for rescue. First responders arrived quickly, but Patrick’s injuries were immediately fatal.

As word spread through Hazard and nearby areas, sorrow rippled through the community. Friends remember Opal as warm-hearted, full of life, and someone always ready to lend a hand. Her loss is deeply felt by family and neighbors alike.

Officials are urging drivers traveling on US 23 North to slow down, stay alert, and proceed carefully through the Dwale zone while the investigation continues. Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage are asked to come forward and assist law enforcement.

For now, the details are limited. But Floyd County and Hazard stand together in grief, hoping answers will come—and that justice and peace will follow.
