Community Mourns Tragic Loss of Cheryl Ann Baxley in Gaines County Crash

Saturday afternoon in Gaines County, Texas, turned from routine to heartbreaking when a single-vehicle crash claimed the life of 71-year-old Cheryl Ann Baxley. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. at the intersection of County Roads 210 and 251, just west of Seminole. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Baxley was driving eastbound on County Road 210 when she failed to stop at the posted stop sign at the intersection. Her vehicle struck a dirt embankment, became airborne, and rolled several times before coming to a halt.

Tragically, the vehicle caught fire shortly after the crash. Despite the efforts of nearby residents who rushed to assist, the flames spread rapidly, and Baxley was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a factor they believe contributed to the severity of her injuries.

Emergency responders from Gaines County Emergency Services and DPS arrived promptly to extinguish the fire and provide medical aid. However, their efforts were unsuccessful in saving Baxley. The vehicle was later removed from the scene for inspection as part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigators are examining various factors to determine the cause of the crash. Roadway conditions, visibility, and vehicle performance are being reviewed, along with potential driver factors such as fatigue or distraction. Weather conditions at the time were clear, ruling out poor visibility as a primary cause. A full reconstruction report is expected to be completed to establish the sequence of events leading up to the fatal crash.

Local residents expressed deep sorrow upon hearing the news, describing Baxley as a friendly and familiar face in the community. Some neighbors noted that the intersection where the incident occurred can be hazardous, particularly for drivers unfamiliar with the area or traveling at higher speeds. The tragedy has renewed calls among residents for improved signage and safety awareness on rural roads throughout the county.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and local authorities extended their condolences to Baxley’s family and urged drivers to exercise caution when navigating rural intersections. Officials reminded motorists to obey all traffic controls, reduce speed in low-visibility areas, and always wear seatbelts. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details will be released once the final report is completed.
