Trash Haul Turned Tragedy: Summerville Woman Found Dead After Dumpster Dive Goes Horribly Wrong

It started as a routine missing-person case on a quiet Friday in Chattooga County—but ended in something no one could have imagined. By late afternoon, authorities uncovered the body of Kimberley “Kimberly” Lindsey, 55, buried inside a waste transport trailer at the county’s transfer station. What had begun as a simple search would soon spiral into a grim investigation of fate, chance, and vulnerability.

Her family reported her missing after they couldn’t reach her. Soon enough they found her vehicle parked behind the Family Dollar on Commerce Street—right beside dumpsters she was known to frequent. Those dumpsters, later emptied and hauled away early that morning, held the key to locating her body.

Friends and loved ones say Lindsey often scavenged through trash bins, collecting discards for reuse or resale. Her boyfriend told police he had once helped her out of another bin the day before, noting she seemed under the influence of prescription drugs at the time. Unbeknownst to those around her, that habit might have placed her on the edge of danger.

When officers surveyed the site at the Family Dollar, the dumpsters were already empty. By tracing the waste removal records, they discovered the bins had been cleared and sent to the county’s transfer station shortly after 1 p.m. that same day. From there, a painstaking search began. Heavy equipment peeled away layers of garbage while investigators, public works staffers, and even K-9 units sifted through the remnants.

Eventually, Lindsey’s body was located in the waste trailer. Coroner J. McElhaney arrived, and the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office was brought in to determine her cause of death. While the community reels, authorities continue to investigate whether her death was accidental, negligent, or something more sinister.

Sheriff Mark A. Schrader expressed the heartbreak of the moment: “This was not the outcome that we were hoping for… Without their efforts, Ms. Lindsey’s family may have never gotten closure.” He also thanked every agency involved for their rapid, coordinated response.

For now, the questions loom: Did Lindsey fall victim to a tragic accident in her routine? Did medical or drug impairment play a role? And was there anything more that could have been done to prevent this outcome? While investigators piece together the final moments of her life, the community is left to wrestle with grief, loss, and the lingering mystery of how a trip to the trash turned fatal.
