A grim scene unfolded just after noon on Tuesday at the intersection of Clairmont Road and Dresden Drive in the city of Brookhaven when a 20-year-old woman, lawfully entering a marked crosswalk, was struck and killed by a dump truck that did not stop. According to investigators, the driver, 54-year-old Omar Ali of Mableton, Georgia, made a right turn from Dresden onto Clairmont just after 12:00 p.m., and the truck collided with the woman while she was crossing.
Traffic-camera footage reportedly captured the moment of impact and the vehicle’s immediate departure from the scene. Police say Ali then returned to the crash site approximately 20 minutes later.
Investigators say Ali now faces three charges: vehicular homicide, felony hit-and-run, and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
The victim’s name has not yet been made public, but authorities confirm she was 20 years old and pronounced dead at the scene. Her boyfriend, who witnessed the event, was able to give a detailed description of the dump truck that fled immediately after the collision.
Brookhaven police, aided by the Chamblee Police Department which initially notified them of the incident, followed surveillance footage and witness descriptions to identify Omar Ali as the driver. He is currently being held at the DeKalb County jail pending formal arraignment.
As the investigation continues, police are appealing to anyone who may have dash-cam footage or additional details about the truck’s route immediately after the incident. They emphasize how critical such footage can be when a vehicle leaves the scene and crucial seconds are lost.
The fatality is a sharp reminder of the vulnerability of pedestrians—even when they have the right of way—and the grave consequences of a moment-ary decision to flee rather than stay and assist. Authorities say more details will be released as the case progresses and charges are formalized.
