Young Iowa Biker Dies After Losing Control on I-80 Exit Ramp

Early Thursday morning, a tragic crash claimed the life of 20-year-old Devon Michael Ernst in Adair County, Iowa. The accident occurred just before 1 a.m. on the westbound side of Interstate 80, near Exit 75, and has shaken the small community as authorities continue piecing together what went wrong.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Ernst was riding a 2006 Suzuki GSX-R600 RS motorcycle westbound when he attempted to take the Exit 75 off-ramp too fast to safely negotiate the curve. In doing so, his bike veered off the roadway and struck a roadside culvert. The force of the impact threw him from the motorcycle, and first responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

The official crash report lists the time of the incident as 12:45 a.m., and confirms that Ernst was not wearing a helmet or protective clothing—an omission investigators believe significantly worsened his injuries. The document also notes that no other vehicles were involved, and that the accident was classified as a single-vehicle fatality.

First responders from Adair County, working alongside the state patrol, briefly closed the ramp to secure the area and carry out crash reconstruction and evidence collection. Debris was cleared and the ramp was reopened later in the morning. Investigators interviewed potential witnesses, inspected the motorcycle, and are still evaluating whether additional factors—such as road conditions or lighting—played any role, though speed remains the primary suspected cause.

While Iowa does not currently enforce a universal helmet law, the patrol’s findings have reignited calls from safety advocates emphasizing that helmets and proper gear can save lives. Officials strongly urge motorcyclists to stick to posted speed limits and complete certified safety training courses.

In the wake of the crash, the Adair community has rallied around Ernst’s family. Those who knew him remember him as an energetic young man with a passion for motorcycles and the outdoors. As the investigation concludes, the Iowa State Patrol extended their condolences and reiterated their commitment to raising awareness about safer riding practices.

The crash report is now documented under case number 2025024735 at the Iowa State Patrol’s fatality records. Authorities continue to review all aspects of the case before issuing a final determination.
