Delaware State Police have confirmed that the man who died in a fatal crash Thursday evening in Delmar is 30-year-old Jeremy Mitchell of Georgetown. Troopers say the crash occurred on November 13, around 5:12 p.m., on Sussex Highway near West Snake Road, when a GMC Sierra went off the road, crossed the median, re-entered on the opposite side, and struck a tree.
According to the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit, the driver left the west side of the roadway for reasons still under investigation. After crossing into the southbound lanes, the truck exited again on the west side and slammed into a tree. Emergency responders pronounced Mitchell dead at the scene.

The crash prompted the closure of Sussex Highway for about four hours while troopers processed the scene. The Delaware State Police are continuing their investigation, and they’re urging anyone who saw anything, or who might have information, to reach out. Sergeant A. Mitchell can be reached at (302) 703-3269, or tips can be submitted to Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333, or even via private Facebook message to DSP.
In their public notice, the DSP also reminds people that if you’re a victim, witness, or have lost someone suddenly, the Victim Services Unit / Delaware Victim Center is available 24/7. They can help walk you through resources and support, and they can be reached at 1-800-VICTIM-1 (1-800-842-8461) or by email at [email protected].
Right now, there’s no word on what exactly caused Mitchell to veer off the road. Authorities are keeping details limited as they await more clarity from the reconstruction unit, but they continue to ask for any witnesses to come forward.
It’s a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life can be — and how suddenly things can go wrong. For his family, friends, and his community in Georgetown, this loss is probably even more raw now that his name has been released.
If you saw the crash, or have any information — no matter how small — please reach out to DSP. Your call could help bring answers.
