Heartbreak in Frayser: Young Man Identified as Zayy Stacks Killed in Overnight Shooting

A tragic shooting in the Frayser neighborhood of Memphis has left one man dead and two others fighting for their lives, state police say. The victim killed has been identified as Zayy Stacks, and authorities say the violence erupted following a disturbance inside a local store late Saturday night.

Just before 10:30 p.m., officers were called to the 2200 block of Frayser Boulevard after multiple 911 calls reported shots being fired. When they arrived, they found three men suffering from gunshot wounds. Sadly, emergency responders pronounced Stacks dead at the scene. The two other men were rushed to nearby hospitals in critical condition, where they remain under intensive care.

According to the Memphis Police Department’s preliminary investigation, the shooting grew out of a confrontation inside the store. Police say two unidentified men, in addition to the two injured, were involved in the altercation. At some point, that argument spilled outside and turned deadly. Witnesses later described seeing the two suspects fleeing — one dressed all in black, the other in a blue shirt.

As of now, no arrests have been made. The Memphis Police continue to search for the pair of suspects, urging anyone with information to reach out. Tipsters can call CrimeStoppers at (901) 528-2274, and can remain completely anonymous.

The loss of Stacks has shaken the Frayser community, which has already been gripped by rising violence in recent months. On social media, friends and family have posted heartfelt tributes — calling him a “beloved friend” and a “good soul taken too soon.” Their grief is reminders of how fragile life can be, especially in places where gun violence feels all too frequent.

This remains an active investigation, and officials say more details may emerge in the coming days. As the community mourns, law enforcement is counting on any lead, no matter how small, to help bring justice for Stacks and hold those responsible accountable.
