High-Speed Red Light: Aurora Man Faces Vehicular Homicide After Deadly Intersection Crash

A late-night journey ended in tragedy when a 41-year-old Aurora resident, identified by the Aurora Police Department (APD) as Cornelius Thomas, was taken into custody following a collision at the intersection of East Jewell Avenue and South Peoria Street that claimed the life of a 28-year-old male driver.

According to investigators, Thomas was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling eastbound on Jewell Avenue when he reportedly ran a red light “at a high rate of speed.” He collided with a Chevrolet Cruze that was heading northbound on South Peoria Street.

The impact was catastrophic for the driver of the Cruze, who was the sole occupant of his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The APD confirmed the victim was a 28-year-old man. Meanwhile, Thomas and a female passenger in his vehicle—whose age was not released—were both transported to hospital with minor injuries. After being treated, Thomas was booked into the Aurora Detention Center on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

Details remain limited, but the language used in the police release indicates speed and disregard for the signal were central to the investigation. There is no mention yet of impairment or other contributing factors. The department stressed that investigators are still piecing together the full sequence of events.

The community has been left reeling as questions linger over how an ordinary intersection in Aurora turned into the site of an avoidable death. The crash remains under active investigation by the APD Traffic Investigations Unit, which is reviewing witness statements, vehicle speeds, light-timing, and other evidence. The victim’s identity is pending formal release by the coroner, and Thomas remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.

As this case progresses, officials are urging anyone who may have dash-cam footage or observed the vehicles’ movements in the moments leading up to the crash to come forward. In the meantime, the neighborhood faces another sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving.
