In the early hours of Tuesday morning, tragedy struck in a normally quiet Evansville neighborhood when 23-year-old Jamaine Vaughans was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 5500 block of Carriage Drive. Despite the efforts of first responders, Vaughans was transported to a nearby hospital and later succumbed to his injuries, the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office confirmed.
Police with the Evansville Police Department were alerted after multiple reports of gunfire in the area. Upon arrival at the address, officers discovered Vaughans with critical injuries. Emergency crews worked to stabilize him and rushed him to the hospital, but the young man did not survive. Investigators say the scene remains under active investigation.

Within hours, detectives identified Drasean Hogan as the suspect in the shooting. Hogan is now booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail, though law enforcement has released little additional information about a motive or the relationship between the victim and the suspect. An autopsy is scheduled by the Coroner’s Office to determine the exact cause and manner of Vaughans’ death.
As evidence is being gathered, detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing neighbors and witnesses to build a clearer picture of what precipitated the violence. A police spokesperson urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact the Evansville Police Department or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers, saying: “Every piece of information matters. Our goal is to bring answers and justice for Jamaine’s loved ones.”
The Carriage Drive neighborhood, described by residents as calm and family-oriented, was shaken by the shooting. One neighbor recalled being awakened by flashing lights and sirens, saying, “It’s devastating that something like this happened right here in our neighborhood.” Friends and acquaintances of Vaughans remember him as a kind, respectful young man whose life was cut far too short.
Community support has grown in the aftermath, with residents offering prayers, sending condolences, and standing by the victim’s family, who have been notified and are receiving support. The Coroner’s Office emphasized that grief services and victim-assistance programs are available to those affected by the incident.
With the investigation ongoing, local authorities continue to stress the importance of community cooperation in solving violent crimes. Funeral arrangements for Jamaine Vaughans will be announced once finalized, and law enforcement hopes tips from the public will help bring clarity and closure to a deeply tragic event.
