When the lunch rush had eased and the afternoon calm settled over the CVS on Swift Street, the last thing anyone expected was violence. But at around 3 p.m. this Thursday, tragedy struck: 42-year-old Rusty A. Donovan, a long-time employee at the store, was shot and killed inside the location at 1914 Swift Street in North Kansas City.
According to the North Kansas City Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the store and quickly arrived at the scene, where they found Donovan suffering from gunshot wounds and then pronounced him dead at the scene. Shortly thereafter, a suspect was taken into custody without incident, and police emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the community.

Investigators described the incident as “isolated,” with no other employees or customers hurt in the shooting. Officers and forensic specialists spent hours at the store: crime-scene tape was in place, shell casings and surveillance footage were being collected, and detectives were canvassing the area for witness statements. Surveillance from nearby businesses is also being reviewed to understand what led to the shooting.
In a statement, CVS expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Donovan, acknowledging him as a valued member of their team and confirming the company’s cooperation with law enforcement. They also noted that counseling and emotional support are being offered to affected employees.
Out in the neighborhood, the shock is palpable. Flowers, candles and handwritten notes line the storefront in memory of Donovan. Regular customers described him as always smiling and always ready to help. “He was always smiling, always helpful,” said one. The community, quiet until now, finds itself grappling with a wound where they expected peace.
The Clay County Prosecutor’s Office and police are working together to review evidence and determine appropriate charges. While the suspect remains in custody, specific details — including identity and motive — are still under investigation. For now, the city mourns the loss of a coworker, neighbor and friend whose life was cut short, and a tight-knit community is left asking why.
