Remains of Missing Truckee Man Identified as 62-Year-Old Gordon Simons

Human remains discovered near a well-loved hiking trail in Truckee have been confirmed to belong to 62-year-old Gordon Simons, say the Truckee Police Department. The news brings a heart-wrenching close to a search that began when his family reported him missing earlier this month.

According to police, Simons had been unreachable for some time before his loved ones alerted authorities. In response, an exhaustive search was launched, with help from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators focused on an area near his home — specifically the stretch of trail alongside Highway 89 South and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

As part of the search effort, a specialized search‑and‑rescue K9 team combed the terrain. It was one of those teams that ultimately located human remains not far from the tracks. Given the challenging terrain and dense foliage, the discovery was both painstaking and delicate.

While Simons’ remains have now been identified, the county coroner is still working to determine the exact cause of death. At this point, officials say there is no obvious sign of foul play or other suspicious circumstances, but the investigation remains open.

The Truckee Police Department, in a heartfelt statement, expressed its “deepest condolences” to Simons’ family and friends. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office also acknowledged their gratitude that their teams were able to help bring closure for the family.

Despite the resolution of his identity, many in the community are shaken. Simons was known locally, and the hike where he was found is popular with residents and visitors alike. Friends say he loved the outdoors, which makes the peaceful yet tragic end all the more poignant.

As the coroner’s office continues its work, Simons’ family is left with both relief and grief — relief that he’s finally been found, but deep sadness over the unanswered questions. For a town like Truckee, the loss of a neighbor in such a quiet spot hits home hard.
