Port Charlotte Son Arrested After Confessed Killing of Father

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — A 25‑year-old man is in jail after allegedly shooting his father to death — then walking back to the scene, covered in blood, to turn himself in.

Here’s what we know so far:
Shortly after 7:00 p.m. on December 8, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting gunfire near Abscott Street in Port Charlotte. One caller said a man was bleeding in a driveway. Officers who responded discovered a man lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He later died from his injuries, and detectives launched a homicide investigation.

While deputies were still at the scene, they saw a vehicle pull up. A man — later identified as Melquan A. Stewart — emerged on foot, covered in what appeared to be blood. Stewart reportedly told deputies he had come to surrender and admitted to shooting his father.

Investigators promptly arrested Stewart. He is currently charged with murder and is being held without bond at the Charlotte County Jail.

Family members or neighbors have not publicly commented, and authorities have not released a motive. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to piece together what led to this tragic incident.

This heartbreaking case has left the Port Charlotte community shaken — a father dead, a son behind bars, and many questions still unanswered.
