Beloved Zippel Elementary Custodian Josh Fuller Dies Suddenly Over Christmas Break in Presque Isle, Maine

Presque Isle, Maine — The halls of Zippel Elementary School feel quieter this week after the sudden passing of Josh Fuller, a cherished custodian and bus driver whose warm smile and kind spirit made him a daily bright spot for students and staff alike. Fuller died unexpectedly over the recent Christmas break, leaving behind a wave of grief across the school community.

Fuller was more than a member of the support staff. Every day, he could be found in the 3rd‑grade wing, greeting children with fist bumps, high fives, and encouraging words. For many young students, he was known simply as “the grown‑up with the big smile,” a title he earned by making every child feel seen and valued.

The news of his death was shared with families in a heartfelt message from Principal Mr. Hallett, who wrote that Fuller “mattered here. He mattered to our students. He mattered to our staff. And he will be remembered with love.” Those words captured the deep impact he had on Zippel’s daily life and culture, where his joyful presence was a constant.

School officials worked closely with counselors to support students as they returned after the holiday. Mrs. Guerrette, the school counselor, and other MSAD #1 counselors were on hand to help students express their grief, answer questions, and talk about what they were feeling. A memory wall was created where children and staff could share drawings, notes, and memories in tribute to Fuller.

Families were also encouraged to continue conversations about loss at home. Parents were advised to reassure their children that they are safe, loved, and supported — recognizing that grief shows up in many ways and at different times. The emphasis was on love, safety, and open dialogue to help students through this tender moment.

Fuller’s influence went far beyond his official duties. He was a friend, a mentor, and a source of comfort to many. Teachers recall his laugh echoing down hallways and his willingness to lend a hand wherever it was needed. His dedication to creating a warm, welcoming environment helped shape the heart of Zippel Elementary.

As the school community continues to grieve, thoughts remain with Fuller’s family and loved ones. His legacy of kindness, connection, and joy will be carried on by students and staff who were lucky enough to know him. In classrooms and corridors around Presque Isle, his memory lives on in the small acts of friendliness and care he inspired every day.
