Michael Harrison Killed in New Year’s Day Shooting Near Sheik’s Restaurant in Trotwood

TROTWOOD, Ohio — Michael Harrison, 26, died early Thursday morning after a shooting in the parking lot of Sheik’s Restaurant and Lounge on Salem Avenue, police say. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office confirmed Harrison’s identity Friday, and officials say he was shot during a fight shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day.

Police were called to the scene around 2:44 a.m. after a 911 caller reported that a man had been shot and was lying on the ground near his vehicle. Officers found Harrison critically wounded in the parking lot and immediately called for medical assistance. But despite efforts on the scene, he was pronounced dead before he could be taken to a hospital.

Captain Molchan of the Trotwood Police Department said investigators believe the shooting occurred during an altercation between Harrison and another person outside the restaurant. “There was an altercation between the suspect and the victim on scene, and during the altercation, the victim was shot,” Molchan told reporters.

Friends and family who knew Harrison describe him as someone full of life and always ready with a smile. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the community, especially in a year when many hoped for a fresh start. Neighbors say the area around Sheik’s Lounge is usually busy on holiday mornings, but no one expected the New Year’s celebration to turn deadly.

Police have not released the name of any suspect or whether an arrest has been made. The investigation is active, with detectives working to piece together what led up to the shooting and who else may have been involved. Authorities are asking anyone with information or video from the area that night to come forward.

This shooting was one of two fatal gun incidents in the Dayton area during New Year’s celebrations, as local law enforcement continues to investigate both scenes. The violent start to the year has reignited discussions about community safety and the need for better conflict prevention, especially around popular late-night spots.

Family members have not yet released a public statement, but close friends plan to hold a vigil for Harrison later this week. They describe him as a devoted son and loyal friend who had big dreams and a bright future ahead of him.
