Late Monday afternoon in San Antonio, a routine drive spiraled into violence and left one man dead. At about 5:30 p.m. on November 10, officers with the San Antonio Police Department were called to the 11200 block of Belair Drive — in the city’s North Side not far from Lockhill Selma Road and NW Military Highway — after multiple reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found 58-year-old Celerino Gonzales Jr. slumped inside his vehicle with gunshot wounds to the chest. Despite efforts to save him, Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene. The county medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.
Investigators say the deadly confrontation began earlier that day with a dispute between Gonzales and a 23-year-old man identified as David Flores Oyervides III. According to preliminary police reports, the two men exchanged words while driving, and Gonzales then followed Oyervides to his residence. Once there, the tension escalated into gunfire.
Authorities allege that Oyervides briefly went inside his home, retrieved another firearm, then emerged and fired additional shots at Gonzales as he attempted to drive away. At some point, Gonzales also fired back, though he was fatally wounded in the exchange.
By Wednesday, Oyervides had been arrested and booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center on a murder charge. He is being held on $250,000 bond. Meanwhile, detectives continue to comb through surveillance video, witness statements, and ballistic evidence to determine exactly how the situation went from traffic flare-up to fatal shooting.
In the San Antonio community, the event has prompted renewed concern about how quickly road rage can escalate. City officials urged drivers to remain calm, avoid pursuing or confronting other motorists, and instead call law enforcement when they feel threatened. The Gonzales family has been offered condolences by local authorities, and though investigators are still working the case, they say more updates will be released as new evidence comes in.
