In a quiet neighborhood off Birch Street in Farmington, Connecticut, tranquility beneath the autumn canopy was shattered when police say 31-year-old Joshua Popielarczyk turned on his father, 62-year-old David Popielarczyk. The discovery of the elder man’s body on the afternoon of November 14 triggered a homicide investigation that left friends and neighbors grappling with shock.
Responding around 4 p.m. to a report of a suspicious death, officers from the Farmington Police Department found David lying in his living room, suffering from multiple trauma wounds later determined to be stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

With investigators from the Connecticut State Police and the Avon Police Department joining the effort, authorities determined that David’s death was a homicide. According to the police, Joshua was arrested Saturday evening and now faces a murder charge in connection with his father’s death.
Joshua is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in the state Superior Court in Torrington, as formal legal proceedings begin. Despite the headline nature of the case, authorities have released next to no further details, citing an “active and ongoing” investigation.
For the Popielarczyk family, the blow is double: the loss of a father and the arrest of his son. While David’s obituary is yet to be published in full, the pattern of events – a suburban residence, an afternoon visit, a scene of violence – has left local residents stunned and seeking answers. Neighbors described Birch Street as typically peaceful, tucked away near Lake Garda and the Burlington line.
Witnesses in the neighborhood say the residence appeared unchanged from the exterior; it was only when police vehicles arrived that the reality inside became clear. One official described the morning news release as brief, thanking supporting agencies and emphasizing that further details would not be released at this time.
As the community processes the tragedy, the key questions linger: what led to the fatal confrontation, how the investigation will proceed, and how a family will reckon with the aftermath. Joshua’s appearance in court will be the first of many stages in what promises to be a difficult and emotionally charged legal journey—for himself, for the Popielarczyk family, and for the Farmington neighborhood now confronting grief and uncertainty.
