Beloved Fayetteville Neighbor, Chong Hwa Otis, 69, Dies After Horrific Two-Car Crash on Bragg Boulevard

The Fayetteville community is in deep mourning after learning that Chong Hwa Otis, 69, passed away following a collision Thursday afternoon on Bragg Boulevard near the I-295 off-ramp. The crash occurred around 1:42 p.m., drawing a rapid response from Fayetteville police, EMS, and fire crews.

According to reports, the accident involved two vehicles: a white 2025 Chevrolet Silverado heading south on Bragg Boulevard, and a gray 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Mrs. Otis, who was exiting from northbound I-295. Investigators say she was navigating the off-ramp when the Silverado struck her vehicle. Despite the immediate and heroic efforts by first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wilton Allen Nickerson, 58, from Stedman, was driving the Silverado. He was rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment, though his current condition has not been publicly disclosed. Authorities confirm he remained at the site to cooperate with investigators.

The Fayetteville Police Department’s Traffic Unit has taken the lead on the investigation. They are meticulously examining the crash site, reviewing vehicle positions, and interviewing witnesses to piece together exactly what happened. Their goal is to understand every factor that led to this heart-wrenching tragedy.

In light of the community’s grief, police are asking anyone who might have seen the crash—or who may have dash-cam or cell-phone footage from just before or after the collision—to come forward. They’ve set up a dedicated tip line: 910-818-1872.

Friends, neighbors, and local community groups have begun offering their condolences. In posts shared on social media, many recalled Mrs. Otis as a warm, kind presence—someone who always greeted you with a smile and carried herself with quiet strength. The loss has struck a chord far beyond her immediate circle.

In these painful hours, thoughts are with Mrs. Otis’s family. The Fayetteville community has united in prayer and support, holding space for their grief. May her memory be a blessing, and may her loved ones feel the love she inspired so deeply.
