Late Monday night in Concord, N.C., a routine traffic stop spiraled into tragedy when a suspected drunk driver fled a trooper’s attempt to stop him and collided with another vehicle, killing the other driver. The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Calvin Leon Costner.
The sequence began around 11 p.m. on Interstate 85, where officers from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol clocked a vehicle traveling at approximately 111 mph. When troopers tried to pull the driver over, they say they detected obvious signs of impairment. Rather than cooperate, the driver bolted, setting off a pursuit.

The chase continued into the city via an exit onto George Liles Parkway near the intersection with George Liles Boulevard. The suspect is reported to have run a red light before crashing into a Cadillac. The impact caused the Cadillac to ignite. The driver in that vehicle – Calvin Leon Costner – was pulled out by responding officers but died at the scene despite their efforts.
One of the officers who helped extricate Costner sustained minor burns during the rescue; no other injuries have been reported. After the crash, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot; as of the latest reports, no arrest has been made and the person remains at large.
Due to the investigation and cleanup, a section of George Liles Parkway — between Exchange Street and Kannapolis Highway — remained closed until approximately 4:45 a.m. Tuesday. Officials urge anyone with information to contact the state highway patrol.
At its heart this is a story of ordinary life cut short. Mr. Costner, simply driving his Cadillac, became collateral damage in someone else’s decision to escape accountability. There’s no word yet about Mr. Costner’s family or background in the public account, but the suddenness of his loss has sparked grief and a call for accountability.
Investigators with the Highway Patrol continue to gather evidence and encourage anyone who might have seen the fleeing vehicle or the crash to come forward. Until then, the questions linger: Why did the driver decide to flee? What else will the investigation reveal? And most importantly, how many innocent lives must be jeopardized when one individual opts to drive under the influence and then flee?
If you’d like, I can check for any updates about the suspect’s identity or arrest status and send you a full timeline of events.
