Late Monday night in Concord, North Carolina, a routine traffic stop turned into a tragic collision that claimed the life of 40-year-old Calvin Leon Costner and left a community reeling. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the incident began on Interstate 85 at about 11 p.m., when officers observed a vehicle racing at 111 mph.
What should have been a standard intervention quickly escalated. The trooper initiated a stop and detected clear signs of impairment from the driver. But before any further assessment could be made, the driver bolted away, prompting a chase onto George Liles Parkway. Officials say the fleeing vehicle ran a red light at high speed and slammed into a Cadillac driven by Costner.

The impact was catastrophic. The Cadillac burst into flames on impact, trapping Costner inside. Responding officers pulled him from the wreckage, but despite their swift action he died at the scene. One officer sustained minor burns during the rescue effort; no other injuries were reported.
In the aftermath, a stretch of George Liles Parkway between Exchange Street and Kannapolis Highway was shut down until about 4:45 a.m. to allow investigators to document the scene and collect evidence. The closure underscores the severity of the crash and the destructive force of the high-speed impact.
Meanwhile, the suspect remains at large. After the crash, the driver fled on foot, and troopers are now urging anyone with information to come forward. They are reviewing surveillance footage, examining vehicle evidence, and interviewing witnesses in hopes of identifying the individual responsible.
Friends and family of Calvin Leon Costner have begun expressing their grief, remembering him as a father, brother and uncle whose life ended far too soon. As the community absorbs the loss, many describe the tragedy as both preventable and avoidable — a cruel reminder of the destructive power of impaired and reckless driving.
In the wake of the crash, authorities emphasize the broader message: speeding, impairment and fleeing law enforcement put everyone’s lives at risk — even those simply going about their evening. The search for the suspect continues, and the community now waits for justice in the face of an unspeakable loss.
