Tragedy Near Garland: Marcedo McNeil and Reginald Howard Die in Fiery Single-Vehicle Crash

Just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday, what began as an ordinary drive on NC-411 east of Garland, North Carolina, ended in heartbreak for two families when a speeding SUV veered off the road and burst into flames, killing both men inside. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says the crash was one of the most devastating they’ve seen all year.

Neighbors heard the roar of an engine and then silence before emergency crews arrived to a scene that was already engulfed in fire. A 2006 Toyota Sequoia, carrying 33-year-old driver Marcedo Allen McNeil of Stedman and 39-year-old passenger Reginald K. Howard of Harrells, had left the pavement at high speed, crossed the centerline, and tore through a roadside ditch before slamming into a utility pole and finally a large tree. The impact and ensuing blaze were so intense that responders couldn’t tell if either man had their seat belt on when the vehicle left the road.

State troopers arriving on NC-411 found mangled metal and charred wreckage instead of what had been a sport utility vehicle only moments before. Firefighters had to fight flames to even get close, and by the time the fire died down, there was little left of the SUV’s interior. Both McNeil and Howard were pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind shock, grief, and questions for the tight-knit communities where they lived.

The crash didn’t just claim lives — it knocked out power for local residents when the SUV’s violent strike brought down a utility pole and sent power lines crashing to the ground. Utility crews worked alongside emergency responders late into the night to restore service, secure the scene, and make sure the stretch of highway was safe again.

Traffic on the Harrells Highway was tied up for hours as investigators combed through the debris, took measurements, and pieced together how an ordinary drive turned fatal so quickly. Motorists were urged to find alternate routes while crews cleared the site and repaired infrastructure.

Preliminary findings from the patrol suggest speed was a major factor — the SUV was traveling fast enough that once control was lost, there was little chance to recover. Officials reminded drivers that excessive speed drastically reduces reaction time and increases the likelihood of deadly outcomes, especially when trees, ditches, and utility poles line rural roads. The investigation is ongoing, and troopers say they will release additional details as they become available.

Friends and neighbors are left to honor the memories of McNeil and Howard, recalling their laughter and presence in their communities. As the holiday season approaches, the pain of this sudden loss is especially sharp, and safety officials hope the tragedy serves as a powerful reminder of how fragile life can be on the open road.
