HYDE COUNTY, N.C. — The quiet roads near Nebraska turned into the scene of a community’s worst nightmare Monday afternoon when 12‑year‑old Xavier Reynolds lost his life in a crash that has left neighbors and family shaken to the core. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says the tragedy unfolded at around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Nebraska Road and High Road near Engelhard, where a dirt bike carrying Reynolds and a 10‑year‑old friend collided with a westbound SUV.
According to officials, the dirt bike failed to stop at a stop sign before entering the highway, striking the SUV and throwing both boys from the vehicle. Neither child was wearing a helmet, a fact that has underscored community concerns about riding safety.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene after the call came in, but despite their efforts, Xavier’s injuries were devastating. He was critically hurt and later died while being transported to a helicopter landing zone for emergency care.
The 10‑year‑old passenger survived but remains hospitalized with serious injuries that authorities describe as non‑life‑threatening. Family members and friends have been keeping vigil, praying for his recovery as the tight‑knit Hyde County community reels from shock.
The driver of the SUV, a local adult woman, was reportedly cooperative with investigators and did not sustain serious injuries. As of now, no charges have been filed and the North Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
Neighbors describe Xavier as a bright, energetic boy who loved life and had so much ahead of him. For many who live in this largely rural area where dirt bikes are common for fun and transportation, the accident has prompted urgent conversations about vehicle safety, proper protective gear, and where off‑road vehicles should be ridden.
In the days since the collision, support has poured in from across Hyde County. Community members have left flowers and notes at makeshift memorials, shared stories of Xavier’s smile and spirit, and rallied around both families affected by the crash. Local leaders and law enforcement are also reminding residents about helmet laws and the importance of adhering to traffic rules to prevent future heartbreak.
