WALKER COUNTY, Ala. — A desperate search that captured the hopes of a community ended in sorrow Friday as authorities confirmed the body of 4-year-old Johnathan Everett “John John” Boley was found about two miles from his father’s home in rural Walker County. The boy’s loyal dog, Buck, was discovered alive beside him.
The young child vanished on December 31, last seen around 11:30 a.m. wearing a bright yellow Mickey Mouse shirt, black pants and Paw Patrol shoes near the 7000 block of Highway 195 between the Manchester and Thach areas. His disappearance sparked an urgent missing person alert and immediate search by local and state law enforcement.
Hundreds of volunteers and officers combed thick woods, fields and uneven terrain in freezing conditions over the past few days. Search teams included ground units, K-9 teams, drones with thermal imaging and dive squads in nearby water bodies, all working tirelessly in the hope of finding Johnathan safe. Despite these efforts, no confirmed signs were found until Friday afternoon.
Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith announced at a news conference that the boy had been located deceased. Investigators confirmed that Johnathan’s father, Jameson Kyle Boley, was arrested earlier this week on separate charges after authorities discovered explosive materials at the family home. He faces counts including unlawful manufacturing of a destructive device and chemical endangerment of a child linked to alleged methamphetamine exposure. Officials emphasized these charges are unrelated to how Johnathan died.
The boy’s family has faced heartbreak beyond measure. Johnathan’s parents were separated, and he had been visiting his father for the holidays under a limited custody arrangement. His mother, who lives in Florida, flew to Alabama as soon as she was notified of the disappearance and has been cooperating with law enforcement.
