The city of Pittsfield is grieving the tragic and unexpected loss of Luis Chin, an 87-year-old resident whose life was cut short following a devastating pedestrian crash on the afternoon of Thursday, June 20, 2025. The Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office confirmed on Monday that Mr. Chin succumbed to his injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Dalton Avenue, near the intersection with Benedict Road.

According to Pittsfield Police, the crash occurred around 2:45 p.m. when a Chevy Impala traveling westbound on Dalton Avenue collided with Mr. Chin as he was walking south and attempting to cross the intersection. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Mr. Chin to Berkshire Medical Center. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he was tragically pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

Dalton Avenue was temporarily shut down between Benedict Road and Harvard Street for approximately two hours while investigators worked to assess the scene and gather evidence. The incident remains under active investigation by the Pittsfield Police Department’s Traffic Unit, with assistance from accident reconstruction specialists.

Luis Chin was more than just a name in a tragic report — he was a cherished member of the Pittsfield community, a loving family man, and a figure known to many for his quiet wisdom, warmth, and dedication to those around him. His sudden passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his neighbors, friends, and loved ones.

Born and raised in Pittsfield, Luis had witnessed generations of change in the city he called home. Throughout his life, he carried himself with humility, grace, and a gentle spirit that touched everyone he met. Known for his kindness and thoughtful nature, Luis was often seen on daily walks in his neighborhood, offering a friendly smile or a wave to passersby. His routines and presence became a quiet but comforting part of the daily rhythm in Pittsfield’s east side.

Luis was deeply committed to his family and community. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he placed great value on connection and togetherness. Family members describe him as a source of strength and wisdom — someone who listened with patience, gave without hesitation, and offered a steady hand through life’s challenges.

Though retired for many years, Luis remained active and engaged. He was a familiar face at local parks, libraries, and community events. Neighbors knew him as a man of dignity and principle, and his loss has reverberated throughout the community, especially among the many people whose lives he touched in quiet, consistent ways.

The tragedy has once again raised concerns about pedestrian safety in Pittsfield, particularly along busy roads like Dalton Avenue. Community members and local advocates have called for increased awareness, improved crosswalk visibility, and safer infrastructure for pedestrians — especially vulnerable seniors and children who regularly navigate the area.

As the investigation into the crash continues, city officials and residents alike have expressed their condolences and support to the Chin family during this incredibly difficult time. A makeshift memorial of flowers and candles has already begun to form near the scene of the incident, a testament to the impact Mr. Chin had on those around him.

Luis Chin’s memory will be cherished by all who knew him. His life, defined by compassion, humility, and love, serves as a reminder of the value of each individual and the lasting legacy they leave behind.

Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by the family and will be announced in the coming days. In the meantime, the community is invited to reflect on the life of a man who exemplified quiet dignity and to recommit to creating safer streets for all.

May Luis Chin rest in eternal peace, and may his family find comfort in the love and memories that endure.
