NEW JERSEY — The Ron and Sons Towing family, along with the greater New Jersey community, is grieving the heartbreaking and untimely loss of Daniel Ortiz, affectionately known as “DJ”, who was tragically killed while on duty along the side of Highway 287.
At just 24 years old, DJ’s life was full of promise, kindness, and a sense of purpose that was evident to all who met him. A dedicated towing operator with Ron and Sons Towing, DJ was doing what he loved — helping others — when a senseless act of negligence claimed his life.
According to witnesses and colleagues, DJ was clearly visible, working responsibly and safely with his emergency lights flashing while assisting on the shoulder of the highway. In a moment that forever altered countless lives, a driver — reportedly inattentive and unaware — struck DJ with fatal force. It was a tragedy that, as coworkers described, “never should have happened.”
“He was standing on the shoulder with his lights flashing, clearly visible, clearly working,” a coworker said. “And someone’s complete negligence and lack of attention ended his life in an instant.”
DJ was not just an employee. He was a beloved member of the Ron and Sons family, a friend to many, and a person whose heart was as big as his smile. Known for his unshakable positivity, infectious laughter, and willingness to help anyone in need, DJ had a rare and special gift: he made people feel safe, supported, and seen — even in their worst moments on the roadside.
“DJ wasn’t just a coworker,” said one team member, through tears. “He was family. He was one of the kindest, most helpful, sweetest, and friendliest people you could ever meet. He’d drop everything just to help someone — no questions asked.”
His death has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit towing community, where workers face daily risks to keep drivers safe. Towing professionals across the state and country are rallying together to honor DJ’s legacy and raise awareness for Move Over laws, which exist to protect roadside workers but are too often ignored.
DJ’s family, both by blood and bond, now face an unimaginable void. Yet in their pain, they are choosing to celebrate the light he brought into the world — a light that burned brightly every time DJ showed up with a warm smile, a helping hand, or a word of encouragement.
In his memory, Ron and Sons Towing will be organizing a memorial convoy, and a GoFundMe has been set up to support DJ’s family during this devastating time. Details will be shared as plans are finalized.
To those who knew DJ, his loss is immeasurable. But so, too, is the love he gave and the legacy he leaves behind — a legacy of service, selflessness, and joy.
Rest in peace, DJ. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. 💛🖤
