Spirit Lake, Iowa, It is with deep sorrow that the Spirit Lake community mourns the tragic loss of David Raak, a 21-year-old whose life was cut short on July 5th in a devastating motorcycle accident on Iowa Highway 9, just east of Thompson.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred around 4 p.m. when a 2015 Buick Encore, driven by 95-year-old LeRoy Weaver of Buffalo Center, crossed the center line and sideswiped a 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle ridden by 64-year-old David Raak. Moments later, the vehicle struck 21-year-old David Raak’s motorcycle head-on, ejecting him from the bike. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash also resulted in injuries to the elder David Raak, LeRoy Weaver, and 21-year-old Kayla Hudelson of Belle Fourche, South Dakota. All were transported to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been publicly released.
David was a beloved son, friend, and member of the Spirit Lake community, known for his vibrant personality, love of the outdoors, and passion for motorcycles. His life, full of promise, adventure, and deep connections with those around him, has left an immeasurable impact.
As word of the tragedy spread, tributes poured in from friends, teachers, and loved ones—sharing memories of David’s bright smile, his kind spirit, and his willingness to help others. A GoFundMe page has been launched to assist his family with funeral expenses during this time of grief.
David Raak’s journey ended far too soon, but his memory will forever ride on in the hearts of those who loved him.
