BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – On Sunday, July 20, 2025, Bexar County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 49-year-old Charles Vandoil Byrd in connection to the death of his wife, Angela Byrd, after discovering a decomposed body in their south Bexar County home. The arrest followed a brief manhunt, with Byrd taken into custody near the 21000 block of Pleasanton Road, approximately one mile from the residence where the remains were found.
The investigation began on Saturday, July 19, 2025, when deputies were dispatched to a home in the 22100 block of Pleasanton Road following a report from a relative who claimed Byrd had admitted to killing his wife. Upon arrival, deputies detected a strong odor of decomposition and, after obtaining a search warrant, discovered a decomposed body wrapped in plastic inside the residence. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to confirm the identity of the remains, believed to be those of 44-year-old Angela Byrd, and to determine the cause of death.
Sheriff Javier Salazar reported that Byrd was cooperative during questioning, admitting to a physical altercation with his wife on or around June 16, 2025, which he believes resulted in her death. Following the incident, Byrd allegedly lived in the home with the decomposing body for over a month, using blankets, carpet, plastic bags, and household substances to mask the odor. In a news conference, Salazar noted Byrd’s chilling remark, “go big or go home,” when discussing his lack of prior criminal history.
Byrd has been charged with tampering with evidence with intent to impair a human corpse. Sheriff Salazar indicated that murder charges are likely pending the medical examiner’s determination of Angela Byrd’s cause of death. If ruled a homicide, additional charges may be filed. Byrd is also awaiting a mental health evaluation, and authorities are seeking to speak with several individuals who may have relevant information about the case.
As he was escorted to a patrol vehicle, Byrd expressed remorse, stating, “I’m so sorry. I loved my wife,” and described experiencing a “mental break.” He urged that his actions not define him and apologized to his children. This remains an ongoing investigation, with updates expected as new details emerge.
