Fatal Shooting at Lake Charles Seawall Claims Life of 26-Year-Old

Authorities in Lake Charles have identified the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday morning, July 20, 2025, as 26-year-old Trakeyvan Dejay Handy. The Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) responded to a call at approximately 6 a.m. at the Lake Charles Event Center, located near the Seawall, where officers discovered Handy deceased from a gunshot wound.

According to LCPD Deputy Chief Kevin Kirkum, the incident is believed to have stemmed from an altercation involving a small group of individuals. While the investigation remains in its preliminary stages, officials have emphasized that the shooting does not appear to be a random act, and there is no evidence suggesting an ongoing threat to the general public.

Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell addressed the community, urging eyewitnesses to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation. “We do believe there are several people who witnessed what occurred on the Seawall,” Caldwell said. “We are asking you to come forward. Your assistance could mean closure for the family of Mr. Handy.”

Investigators are actively collecting and reviewing evidence, including surveillance footage from nearby businesses and public areas, to reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting. No details regarding suspects or arrests have been released at this time, as the investigation is ongoing. The LCPD has stressed that witness statements will be critical in advancing the case.
