Father of Rocky Mount Officer Fatally Shot in Sunset Park Tragedy”

Rocky Mount, N.C. — A devastating shooting at Sunset Park has left the Rocky Mount community in mourning, as the Rocky Mount Police Department releases new details about the incident that occurred on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., officers responded to a shots-fired call at 550 N. Taylor Street in Sunset Park. Upon arrival, they found 58-year-old Jaime De La Fuente inside a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. De La Fuente, identified as the father of a Rocky Mount Police Officer, was rushed to UNC Nash Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect, 47-year-old Calvin Conyers, fled the scene on foot to Chico’s Mexican Restaurant at 1701 Sunset Avenue. In the restaurant’s parking lot, Conyers attempted to carjack a vehicle occupied by an adult woman and a child, brandishing a firearm. During the confrontation, Conyers turned the gun on himself, sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a medical facility and remains in critical condition.

Further investigation revealed a fourth victim who sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident. This individual was treated and released by EMS at the scene.

Conyers faces multiple charges, including:

– First Degree Murder
– Attempted First Degree Murder
– Two Counts of Second Degree Kidnapping

The Rocky Mount Police Department has emphasized that this incident is isolated and unrelated to a separate shooting reported in the 1400 block of Russell Street. The department, alongside city officials, expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of Jaime De La Fuente and the broader RMPD community, urging the public to offer support during this challenging time.
