Body Found After Family-Led Search for Teen Who Fled Car Ride and Sent Distress Message

Giovanni Pelletier, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate from Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, embarked on what was meant to be a bonding trip to Florida to meet his estranged father’s family. But within hours of arriving, Giovanni sent a chilling text to his mother: “Mom, help.” That message would be the last anyone heard from him.

On August 1, Giovanni left Englewood, Florida, around 1:30 a.m. with three cousins—relatives he had only interacted with via FaceTime and text. They were headed to Brevard County. Just 25 minutes into the trip, Giovanni began acting erratically, according to the cousins, and exited the vehicle near Interstate 75 and State Road 70 in Manatee County. His phone and backpack were later found in that area.

️ *A Family’s Relentless Search
Despite official search efforts, it was Giovanni’s own family—alongside a private investigative group called We Are the Essentials—who ultimately located his body. On August 8, a relative spotted a partially submerged body in a retention pond near the same location where Giovanni’s belongings had been found. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the discovery but noted that the body was too decomposed for immediate identification.

An autopsy conducted by the District 12 Medical Examiner’s Office revealed no signs of trauma or foul play. However, due to the advanced state of decomposition, forensic testing and toxicology reports are still pending. These results may take months to complete.

*A Mother’s Grief and Unanswered Questions
Bridgette Pelletier, Giovanni’s mother, confirmed the tragic news on social media: “My son was recently found after a desperate search by OUR FAMILY ALONE, and we are still facing an active investigation into his death. I am living every parent’s worst nightmare, trying to find the strength to give him the goodbye he deserves.”

The case has sparked public concern and scrutiny. Some family members have questioned the behavior of the cousins who picked Giovanni up, with conflicting accounts suggesting he may have panicked after smoking marijuana and allegedly produced a knife before fleeing. Bridgette disputes this characterization, insisting it was out of character for her son.

*Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have examined the white Chevy Malibu used during the trip, though no suspects have been named. The investigation remains active, with detectives working to piece together the final moments of Giovanni’s life.

As the community mourns, Giovanni’s story serves as a haunting reminder of how quickly a moment can turn into a mystery—and how love and determination can drive a family to uncover the truth, even in the face of unimaginable loss.
