In the quiet early hours of August 11, 2025, the city of Yonkers was jolted awake by a tragic act of violence that claimed the life of 41-year-old James Hardy. The incident unfolded on the sidewalk outside 30 Cliff Street, where a heated confrontation between Hardy and another man escalated into a fatal shooting.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., Yonkers Police responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found Hardy suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, Hardy was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Xavier Palmer, was swiftly apprehended by detectives from the Yonkers Police Major Case Squad. Within just 12 hours of the shooting, Palmer was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder and Second Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon—both felony offenses.

According to investigators, the shooting was not random. It stemmed from a dispute between Palmer and Hardy that erupted on the sidewalk. Witnesses reported a verbal altercation that quickly turned violent when Palmer allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Hardy before fleeing the scene.

Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza praised the rapid response and investigative work of his department, stating, “Great work by our Detectives in identifying and apprehending the shooter in this case within just 12 hours of the incident. We will not tolerate senseless violence on our streets. If you commit these acts here, you will be apprehended and delivered to the justice system.”

The case is now being prosecuted by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office. Meanwhile, the Yonkers Police Department continues to gather evidence and interview witnesses to build a comprehensive picture of what led to this devastating event.

As the community mourns the loss of James Hardy, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges posed by gun violence. Local leaders and law enforcement officials are reaffirming their commitment to public safety and justice, urging anyone with additional information to come forward.

In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, Yonkers stands united in grief, determined to honor Hardy’s memory and prevent future acts of violence from tearing through the fabric of the community.
