Rider Loses Life on Winding Catalina Highway as Motorcycle Slides Out

Under clear skies and flowing mountain air, 53-year-old Jorge Marcano took a ride down Catalina Highway on Saturday afternoon—only to have the joyful descent turn into tragedy when the rear wheel of his motorcycle lost traction, ejecting him onto the pavement and ending his life.

According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD), Marcano was heading downhill near milepost 9 when his motorcycle began to slide out of control. Witnesses said the machine flipped over, and Marcano was thrown from his ride and landed on the roadway. Emergency crews responded swiftly, but Marcano was pronounced dead at the scene. The PCSD noted he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and no other vehicles were involved.

Investigators from the PCSD Traffic Unit are now probing the circumstances of the accident. They’re focusing on factors such as speed, the condition of the road surface, and any mechanical issues that might have caused the rear wheel to lose grip. That segment of Catalina Highway was temporarily closed so deputies could document and process the scene before reopening it to traffic.

The stretch of Catalina Highway where the crash occurred is well-known among riders for its breathtaking vistas and serpentine curves. But that beauty comes with risk: temperature fluctuations, changing traction conditions, and the demands of descending on a steep, curved roadway all combine to make it a challenging route—especially when you’re going downhill.

Locals expressed deep sympathy for Marcano’s family and friends. On social media community members sent condolences and also shared the incident as a cautionary tale for fellow riders—highlighting the importance of checking tire condition, wearing full protective gear, and adjusting speed to road conditions, especially when riding mountain roads. Authorities echoed that message.

As the investigation continues, the PCSD is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or observed unusual road conditions in that area on Saturday to come forward. Their goal is not only to determine exactly what happened in Marcano’s case but also to glean lessons that might help prevent future tragedies on this scenic but challenging road.

Marcano’s ride was meant to be an enjoyable escape into the mountains. Instead, it became a somber reminder that even for experienced motorcyclists, the combination of speed, curve, surface change and descent on roads like Catalina Highway demands respect—and that a single unexpected slide can have fatal consequences. The PCSD extended its deepest sympathies to Marcano’s loved ones, thanked first responders for their efforts, and emphasized that while the road remains open and beautiful, it remains unforgiving.
