Shortly before dawn early this Tuesday, a routine road mishap turned tragic in Falls Township, Pennsylvania. At about 2:25 a.m., officers from the Falls Township Police Department responded to northbound U.S. Route 1 just north of the Route 13 overpass, where a black Cadillac had struck a concrete divider and come to rest in the middle of the roadway. A short time later, the cleared collision transformed into a fatal pedestrian incident.
The man whose life ended so unexpectedly has been identified as 38-year-old Jay Kountree of Trenton, New Jersey. Authorities say he was driving the Cadillac, lost control near the overpass, and collided with the lane divider. Moments after the impact, Kountree exited the disabled vehicle and remained on the highway — where he was struck by a passing Lexus ES3 sedan driven by another Trenton resident, age 30. The Lexus driver was reported uninjured.
Emergency responders rushed Kountree to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where he succumbed to his injuries. A passenger in the Cadillac, thankfully less gravely affected, sustained only minor injuries and sought treatment. The investigation remains open: at this time there is no word on whether speed, alcohol, mechanical failure or other factors played a role. The Traffic Safety Unit of the Falls Township Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident — or captured it on dash-cam — to reach out.
The highway was temporarily shut down to allow investigators to process the scene, piece together the sequence of events, and clear the wreckage. The blockage created significant disruption for early-morning commuters on a major corridor that links communities in Bucks County and the region.
