Wrong‑Way Driver, Three Teens Killed in Tragedy on U.S. 131

Late Sunday night, a peaceful Michigan community was shattered by one of the most tragic multi‑vehicle collisions in recent memory. A 38‑year‑old woman from Grand Rapids, identified as Erin Louise Jones, entered the northbound lanes of US Highway 131 in Allegan County heading south and struck a vehicle head‑on around 1 a.m., leading to the deaths of four people and serious injuries to others.

According to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, Jones was originally driving southbound in the correct lanes, then exited at the 129th Avenue ramp, re‑entered the freeway, made a U‑turn and ended up traveling south in the northbound lanes — fully into oncoming traffic — where the fatal impact occurred.

The second vehicle, a Ford Fusion driven by 18‑year‑old Emmanuel Browning of Kalamazoo, was struck head‑on. Browning and a front‑seat passenger died at the scene. Officials later confirmed a 17‑year‑old female passenger from Portage, who was in the back seat, died of her injuries a short time later—bringing the death toll to four.

Authorities have indicated that alcohol may have played a role in the crash, though investigations are ongoing and toxicology results are still pending. Lt. Brandon Berens of the sheriff’s office described the event as “a chaotic scene,” adding that reaction time would have been “absolutely minimal” for the other vehicle coming head‑on.

Among the dead is Browning, identified by his school district as a graduate of Portage Northern High School this year and a prospective student at Davenport University who had recently earned a spot on the football roster. The school district is offering counseling services for students affected by the loss.

Two additional teens — a 16‑year‑old girl from Comstock High School and an 18‑year‑old boy — were critically injured in the crash and remain hospitalized. Authorities have chosen not to release further names at this time, citing the wishes of the families and the juvenile status of several involved.

This heartbreaking incident has torn at the fabric of multiple communities in West Michigan. As families mourn the lives lost and others fight for recovery, the crash investigation continues and police have pledged further updates while respecting the privacy of those impacted.

May the memories of Erin Louise Jones, Emmanuel Browning, the young woman from Portage, and all affected live on in strength and compassion.
