Beloved Cowboys’ Young DE Marshawn Kneeland Dies At Just 24

It’s a heartbreaking morning for the Dallas Cowboys family. Defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, just 24 years old, passed away early Thursday, the team confirmed. In a statement the organization called him a “beloved teammate and member of our organization,” and extended heartfelt thoughts to his girlfriend Catalina and his family.

Kneeland was selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 56th overall, after a standout collegiate career at Western Michigan Broncos. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he rose through the ranks at Godwin Heights High School before heading to Kalamazoo.

He had appeared in 18 games over his two seasons with the Cowboys, recording 26 tackles and one sack, with four starts among those appearances. But perhaps the most fitting tribute to his promise arrived just days ago: in a Monday Night game versus the Arizona Cardinals, he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to score his first career touchdown.

The cause of his death has not been released, and the Cowboys have asked for privacy as they and Kneeland’s loved ones try to process this sudden tragedy.

Kneeland’s journey to the NFL was one defined by resilience and heart. At Western Michigan, his senior year brought 57 tackles, 7 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks, earning second-team All-MAC honors. He carried his mother’s memory with him—as he once revealed he kept her ashes close as a symbol of her inspiration.

In Dallas, he swiftly earned admiration—not just for his physical play but his locker-room presence, his humble attitude and his earnest work ethic. His agent, Jonathan Perzley, described him as someone who “poured his heart into every snap, every practice… to lose someone with his talent, spirit and goodness is a pain I can hardly put into words.”

His sudden passing leaves a void: a player just finding his stride, a life full of potential extinguished far too early. The football community—from teammates to coaches to fans—stands united in grief, and in sending strength to Catalina, his family and all who knew and loved him.

Marshawn Kneeland will be remembered for his passion for the game, his dedication to his teammates, and the warmth he brought to every setting. His legacy lives on in every stride he took on the field and every smile he brought to the locker room.
